The church is located next to the Cathedral, in the heart of the extraordinary downtown, between Garcia Moreno and Espejo Street. The structure dates from the seventeenth century and its great beauty is characterized by a set of sculptures, Renaissance style in decoration and finishes.

On November 4th, 1694 José Jaime Ortiz architect signed the contract for the construction of the church and it would be included in the First Book of Registration of the founders of the town of Quito. Its facade was completed in 1706. In 1715 its construction was completed. Between 1731 and 1747 his altarpieces were finished. All this was possible by financial contributions from the Faternidad del Sagrado Sacramento, Fraternity of the Blessed Sacrament.

For the construction of the building was necessary to fill the river bed leaved after the canalization of “ quebrada  de  El Tejar”. For this reason was developed a Latin cross plan with a very short nave, a structure formed by two segments that intersect each other at  a right angle where the  main nave and the transept nave  have different size. This type of structure is the work of Italian architecture.

Within this wonderful construction the richness of Quito Baroque Art is expresses. Legarda's work sumptuously decorate columns and Alban Francis’s work brings to life the central dome ending in a compelling dome decorated with frescoes of biblical scenes with archangels. The valuable mural painting of the dome and the screen, are from the mid-eighteenth century. The main altar is covered with gold and as part of the most important altars can be seen Nuestra Señora Del Sagrado Corazón, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart.
